The first-person shooter has been around for many years. In the early 1990s we were blasting away at demons in Doom and Quake, and then at more realistic human enemies in GoldenEye 007 and Call of Duty. The internet made possible the Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch scenarios, and this sort of gameplay has been enormously popular ever since then.
